i agree with Andrew's suggestion to remove the mats. i have not
experienced the vapours in this particular case, but have in other cases
- my wife has environmental allergies and vapours such as these
described cause her to go into anaphalaxis - so best to get them out if
possible as they can be toxic. 

if we need more ventilation, how about an EXTRACTOR rather than an
aircon, linked to the lights with a 1hr time-out?
